2001: A Space Odyssey
The Project
For Audio For Multimedia (AFMM), it was required to add post-production to an existing clip from any piece of media. This process includes using synthesisers, sound libraries, and foley to add sounds to a silent clip that illustrates the movement and scene of the clip.
For my chosen clip, I chose the 'Star-Gate Sequence' from 2001: A Space Odyssey. The reason that I chose this specific scene is because I felt it could both challenge me and give me many opportunities to create and layer interesting sounds.
The Plan
In order to efficiently and effectively create ideas and showcase my inspirations, I arranged my planning into a discussion/mood board using Padlet. You can click the link below to view this Padlet for more information on my AFMM plan.
Standout Sounds and Moments
The Bass (1:49-2:11)
For this bass, I used a wavetable synth with an LFO that modulated the wave that the synthesiser was putting out. I then added a Drum Buss plugin to distort this bass. The bass also plays small dyads that are slightly automated in pitch. Overall, I am proud of this sound because it heavily adds to the atmosphere of the clip as well as adding interesting textures to accompany the various sounds within this moment.
Freeze-Frames (as seen at 1:48)
Throughout the clips, there are several occasions of the dream-like visuals being interrupted by still images of the astronaut's face. To capture this feeling of surprise and mystery, I cut off all other sounds you would usually hear and replaced them with white noise, a bass, and a small pluck sound. After each still image is flashed on the screen, we are met with an abrupt change of colours and movement in the scene. To compliment this, the sounds used in the clip change after every freeze-frame. I am proud of these moments as they effectively show movement in the clip, allowing for more immersion from the watcher.
This sampler is how I made the small pluck, which is sampling wind whistling and chopped to sound almost like a bird.
