Cowboy Nudes Mixing

EWI

An EQ, removing unecessary low end from the EWI as well as two higher frequencies that stood out as annoying and messy to me.

Guitar

EQ (Fabfilter Pro-Q), cutting out unnecessary low end to avoid the guitar recordings sounding bassy and fatiguing.

Compressor, to maintain sustain during the long notes that are held throughout the slow melody of the song.

Drums

For the drum bus, I added a Reel Tape Saturation plugin to add some warmth and depth to the sound of the drums.

Due to the nature of the song, and the pleasant raw sound of the drum recording, I opted to keep the mixing minimal and "realistic", so there will be less processing on the drums as opposed to something like Cowboy Nudes or a pop record.

For the kick, I added an EQ that cut off some low mids which made room for the bass, and had a slight high range curve that allowed the kick to have a bit more clarity throughout the mix.

For the overheads, to avoid mud from unnecessary frequencies and the kick, I added an EQ that cut off the low end of the spectrum.

Similarly to the overheads, I wanted to avoid mud from unecessary frequencies from the rest of the kit and cut the low end. However, I additionally added a dramatic cut to the low-mids as there were unpleasant frequencies coming from the stick's impact to the hihat.

Bass DI

EQ, removing unnecessary lows from the bass to create room for the kick's low end in the mix.

There is also a cut at around 40hZ because it was interfering with the sound of the kick drum, thus mudding up the mix.

I added an amp simulator to the D.I bass for a slightly distorted sound to my bass which added harmonics that allowed the bass to be heard clearly, even on phone speakers.

I used this Lo-Fi plugin to add further saturation, as well as lowering the bitrate slightly to create an interesting texture when layered with the amped bass.

Amplified Bass

Since I like the sound of the amp sound, I only added an EQ that cut out very low frequencies which gave the kick more room to shine.

The cut was more exaggerated, as the D.I bass already has enough low end for the bass sound and I felt the mix could benefit from less of it,

Vocals

I chose to EQ the vocals with just a low cut, as the raw sound of the vocals was nice enough for the song and the recording was done well.

Crunch Rhythm

I thought the raw sound of the crunchy rhythm guitar was good, so I only added a compressor to ensure dynamic consistency throughout the song.

Hard/Dist Rhythm

Similarly to my crunch rhythm, I felt the raw sound of the distorted rhythm guitars needed very little tweaking. I ran them through this EQ which cleared some mids and lows to avoid mudding up the mix and improve clarity.
